Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation. – Deuteronomy 7:9 & Numbers 14:18 (NIV)
Does doing what is right really pay off? At times when you don’t see immediate results, you may think, what’s the use?…I’m not seeing any good come out of it anyway. Unfortunately, we live in a culture where the desire for instant gratification is at an all time high. Unless we see immediate results, we don’t think there could possibly be a positive outcome. Thus, we resort to gratifying the flesh.
The Word says that we have the ability to break cycles and generational curses. What a profound contrast in the timeframe where blessings and curses are involved. Scripture states that curses effect the third and fourth generations but blessings extend to a thousand generations. The key to whether our family line will continue to operate under the curse or interrupt the cycle and resort to operating under the blessing is based on knowing the Word of God and being obedient. We don’t have to necessarily understand or agree…we must simply obey.
Breaking past dysfunctional cycles does not involve rocket science, but it does involve being proactive and making a conscious effort to make better choices in our everyday lives. The choices you make today, no matter how large or small, have the ability to affect four generations in a negative way or a thousand generations in a positive way. What type of legacy do you plan to leave?
Lord, Your infallible Word declares that my actions WILL affect generations to come. I chose to study Your Word so that I can know how You want me to live. Whether or not I see immediate positive results, I plan to respond appropriately so that my family line will reap the benefits.
