We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. – 2 Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)
Like me, do you have a hard time falling asleep? When I lay my head on the pillow and everything gets quiet, it seems that my brain kicks into overdrive. If the process it undergoes was visible to the naked eye, it would look like a cassette tape whereas the rewind and fast forward mechanism has been pressed intermittently with no rhyme or reason.
There are various techniques out there to coax the brain into falling asleep. I am not sure where this originated, but counting sheep has never worked for me. Also, I have heard people say that I simply need to clear the thoughts from my head. That also has not proven to be successful for me either. In actuality, thinking about “nothing” in reality is still thinking about “something”.
One thing that has proven to be effective comes from the One who fashioned the human brain. We are told to take captive every thought. Essentially we are to arrest the thoughts and hand them over in submission to Christ. I then allow Christ to use the space in my brain to prompt me to pray for those in need. I also allow Him to set the sleep timer at His discretion. I may not fall asleep immediately but at least that time is not wasted…it intersects heaven’s purpose for the earthly realm until my brain powers off.
Lord, I thank You that in Your Word I can find a solution to all of life’s issues. As I search Your Word, I am made aware that not a single moment of my time has to be wasted…not even the time it takes me to fall asleep.
