For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life. – 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
How do you respond to correction? Does pride rise to the surface and cause you to get defensive? Do you shrivel up inside and shrink back in fear? Correction is only beneficial if it is administered and received in a God honoring God fearing way. Anything outside of that simply renders it ineffective. It is true that it will invoke a response, but probably not a profitable one.
In the world in which we live, there are extreme cases of people using correction as a means of control. They fail to realize that this is a God given tool to be used to bring people under God’s submission, not our own. This type of behavior will inevitably do more harm than good.
Since every human has been born with a sinful nature, it is imperative that correction be implemented as a means to counteract that nature. Godly correction serves as the guard rails which keep one from going totally off course. Godly correction does not rob a person of hope, but instead gives them a dose of courage to seek forgiveness, make an about face turn and walk in the fullness of life.
Lord, help me to administer and receive correction in a way that will create healthy boundaries and illuminate a clear path to leading a God centered life.
