Breaking Generational Curses

images[6] (6)And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.” – Exodus 34:6-7 (NIV)

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. – Romans 12:1-2 (NIV)

Do you have an elephant in the room whereas the members of your family try to pretend that it doesn’t exist? Is the elephant drug abuse, sexual sin, an explosive temper, etc? Its not that your family is oblivious to the fact that it exist, it is just that it has been there for so long that you have learned how to cope with life by maneuvering around it.

Perhaps you don’t invite outsiders into the room in fear that they may notice it and think differently about you. On the other hand, you may have had so much practice with hiding the elephant that you see no problem inviting others into the room. Since you have become an expert at hiding the issue, you have learned how to shove it into a closet just long enough to maintain the “all is well” front.

Nevertheless, God desires better for us. He would like us to expose the elephant. This is not so we will feel condemned or ashamed but so that we can be removed from its weight and be set free. The truth of the matter is that generational curses have been passed down since time began. It just takes one person to say, “enough is enough…I will make the necessary changes so that the curse is broken and will not transfer to another generation.”

Lord, I realize that as I expose and confront the elephant in the room, I will experience a great deal of opposition. It could prove to be a painstaking process. Please give me the strength to persevere because the spiritual state of my children and children’s children are at stake.
