“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. – Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
Do you fear the loss of material possessions? Are you afraid of doing without? What do you feel that you must have in order to feel financially secure? Have you created a mindset of a certain lifestyle that you feel you cannot part with under any circumstances? Perhaps some of those things are slipping through your fingers and you are questioning God’s love as He allows the loss to take place.
Have you ever considered that maybe, just maybe, He allows material things to be taken away from us in order to prosper us emotionally and spiritually? At times, we fail to realize that God is actually allowing this to happen out of His great love for us, not as a form of punishment. Unfortunately, many think of prosperity in correlation to the accumulation of material possessions when in fact, it is the maintenance of a set lifestyle that quite frequently puts unnecessary stress and strain on our lives. Hence, those things that we hold in high esteem serve as a hindrance to our connectivity with God, as we do whatever it takes to maintain that lifestyle, even crowd out our alone time with Him.
God wants nothing more than to set us free from the bondage placed on us by our desire for maintaining certain possessions. Many times it requires that God take us down in order to build us back up with the right mindset. In a sense, we have to learn the art of surviving in order to transition to thriving. Even if we get to a point where nothing remains and we feel that our relationship with God is all that we have left, it is to our advantage to realize that He is all that we need. At which point, He can add back to us what are considered true needs, the things that won’t cause unnecessary stress and strain.
Lord, help me to embrace the loss of material possessions that are causing unnecessary stress and strain in my life as I attempt to hold too tightly to them. Help me to look forward to and find contentment in maintaining the lifestyle that You have planned for me.
