Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. – Romans 12:2 (NIV)
How do you handle stress in your life? There are so many self-help books out there that give suggestions on dealing with stress. Perhaps you exercise or take a bubble bath. You may have even found yourself yelling a time or two as your stress level was more intense than your coping mechanisms.
Stress, when not dealt with properly, can prove to be very destructive. Nevertheless, there are times when a stressful situation is staring you in the face and you are boxed in as if there were 4 walls pressing up against you. At times as such when exercise, a bubble bath or other external remedies are not possible, you may want to create an internal place of retreat.
This internal place of retreat is less about doing and more about a sense of being. Essentially, you can create a vacation spot in your mind reserved for just you and Jesus to hang out. It can consist of a place that you’ve visited in days gone by or a place where you’ve longed to visit. As you are creating the imagery, place within this space the sights and sounds that brings you the utmost peace.
Lord, thank You for giving me a mind that I can safeguard as my place of retreat regardless of the chaos that is going on around me.
