Remain Under His Covering

Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. – Ephesians 6:11-17

I am probably the most squeamish person when it comes to water. I would say I actually despise getting wet. Last weekend there was a nice down pour of rain and I stayed under a store front covering for a half hour. I refused to leave because I did not want to get wet. The instance where I went wrong took place before I ever left my vehicle. The sky appeared to be really dark, but I chose to not take time out to grab an umbrella. I was going to run for it so I stepped out without my covering.

This is also the case when we choose not to take time to clothe ourselves with God’s armor. Most of us would agree that it is essential to do it before we get out of bed each morning. We all know that the battle doesn’t only start when we walk out of our front door each day. Satan is crafty enough to use things and loved ones in our own home to get at us. Many times we are hit blindsided without our covering in the midst of our day and we say, “Lord, what was that all about”? We wonder what just happened to us when the truth of the matter in God’s Word says we already have the answer. We must be persistent in clothing ourselves with our spiritual armor. At times we may take the armor lightly because they are not visually tangible pieces, but then again the true battle is not against flesh and blood.

Simply having a mental picture of dressing ourselves with these weapons is not enough. Since the Word of God is alive and active, we must figure out what it takes to make these weapons work on our behalf. It takes a premeditated plan to take the Words off of the page and bring these weapons to life. For instance, with the belt of truth, it’s not going to work on our behalf if we continuously allow the lies of the world to override the truth tucked in God’s Word. Also, the shield of faith will not extinguish the flaming arrows if we are crouched down in fear. Dissecting and believing in the power of the Word is the only way the weapons will actually work on our behalf.

Lord, help us to realize the importance of being fully clothed with our spiritual armor each and every day. Also, help us to take the necessary steps in faith to remove the Words from the page and wield them in a way that they will come to life to work on our behalf.
