Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God—I say this to your shame. – 1 Corinthians 15:34 (NIV)
What would our lives look like if we dedicated our 5 senses to God? Would this internal choice produce a difference in our external actions? Three out of the five senses are spoken of quite frequently as having the most influence over our spiritual state. They are usually summed up with the illustration of the three little monkeys that represent the phrase “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”. To alleviate the evil is good but we need to take it a step further. We need to feed our senses with wholesome things that remind us of God. Taking time out to look at and hear the things of nature, not man-made but God’s creation in its rarest form, can offer a reminder in the midst of a chaotic world that God is still on His throne reigning over you and me.
One of the five senses is often misconstrued. In reference to the mouth, the sense is actually about taste. How can we dedicate our taste buds to God? For starters, we could vow to not complain when the taste of our food does not measure up to our expectations. Eating to be nourished and not merely to gratify the flesh is one way to honor God with our taste buds. Who knows we may loose a pound or two of unneeded weight in the process. Also, there is the sense of touch. It’s somewhat of a given that if we refrain from touching something impure it would honor God. We could go a step further and vow to touch at least one thing a day in nature and examine its complexity. As I move on to talk about the 5th sense, I am having a flash back of the day I went to Downtown Houston to visit with the homeless. As I dedicated my sense of smell to God, I was able to lean in closer to get to know a homeless man who has had a lasting impression in my life. Had I allowed myself to be limited by sense of smell, I would never have made that lifelong friend who I carry in my thoughts and prayers.
God has blessed us with the five senses so that we are afforded the ability to experience life to the fullest. In turn, He would like us to use each of our five senses to glorify Him. He has entrusted us with the senses so that we can willingly dedicate them back to Him. The more we surrender our five senses to Him, the more our external actions will reflect His personality.
Lord, I thank You for granting me fives senses so that I can experience abundant life. I dedicate those senses to You. I recognize that even my senses are not merely for my pleasure, but to use as a means to please You. Teach me creative ways to awaken those senses so that Your character will be evident in me to all who I come in contact with.
